The grandfather of environmentalism in Louisiana, Willie A. Fontenot; has sent a letter to the LDEQ. In short he says. “Officials in industry and government have known about the serious contamination of the Calcasieu River Basin for at least six or seven decades. The public only found out about the presence of the heavy metal Mercury in 1970 and the serious chemical contamination in 1987. Now in 2010 we are being told that some of our state officials would finally start to clean up part of the contamination in the waters, sediments and wetlands of Bayou d’Inde. I believe that state law requires that a complete cleanup, and nothing less needs to happen.”
He has requested that the LDEQ provide sixty more days for him to be able to gain access to the records of the DEQ. So, that he can fully evaluate and comment on the plans by the DEQ for due work to the water, sediment and wetlands of Bayou d’Inde.
Those who would like to help his effort, can contact the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality. With the statement. "I support the request by Willie Fontenot for sixty more days to comment on the DEQ plans for Bayou d’Inde, AI 7443."
