TGIF or TGFO

TGIF, Thank God It’s Friday, was a common phrase used throughout the 90’s. It brought a smile to every student’s face, and teachers, as well. The weekend was just a few short hours away, a nice break after a long week. But, after this week, with all of the heartbreaking news in the City of New Orleans. Another, phrase comes to mind. TGFO, Thank God Friday’s Over.
This week, has been particularly vile even for New Orleans criminals. A man, rather a monster, killed his two-year-old son in the most disturbing unimaginable way possible. His reasoning for this unspeakable act, he did not want to pay child support!!!
Also, we have yet another stand of between NOPD Warren Riley, and NAACP Danatus King. Over what, the death of Adolph Grimes, who was shot by police on New Year’s Day. Apparently Adolph Grimes III, brazenly shot first at the police, which ensued the wrath of the NOPD with 12 shots in Grimes’ back. But honestly, it does not take a rocket scientist to figure out that at the very least, you should never even point a gun at a cop.
Then, Wednesday two people who fit the definition of being a Devout Roman Catholic, were arrested for trespassing at their church. Who was behind these arrests, The Archbishop of New Orleans himself, Alfred Hughes. Whose very job it is to protect the Catholics of New Orleans. Though, the charges were later dropped. I have to say, both of my departed grandfathers are without a doubt rolling over in their graves. However, one was cremated so I guess he’s rolling around in the ocean.
Surprisingly, there was some good news this week. Such as Joseph Cao being sworn in as the first ever Vietnamese-American to the U.S. House of Representatives. The start of a brand new Carnival season, the reopening of the Mahalia Jackson Theater, and the grass roots group Silence is Violence holding another protest against the City‘s high crime rate.
TGFO, Thank God Friday’s Over. Unfortunately, that cynical statement sounds to true. Thank God this week is almost over, and hopefully Sunday will be the start of a much better seven day chapter.
